Pomeranian clothes: size, winter and rain jumpsuits

In short: a Pomeranian usually wears size S–M, which means a chest girth of about 31–41 cm (12–16 in); the tiniest dogs take XS (27–32 cm). A small German Spitz (Kleinspitz) more often needs M–L (35–46 cm). The thick double coat keeps a spitz warm, so in dry cold an adult dog feels the chill less than a chihuahua or a toy terrier. The main job of Pomeranian clothes is to keep the coat clean and dry in rain, slush and wet snow; insulation matters in hard frost, after a short haircut, and for puppies and senior dogs. The picks below cost $27–79, and any of them can be made to your dog’s measurements (+15%).

A fluffy coat adds a few centimetres to the girth, so measure the chest at its widest point behind the front legs and the neck at its base, where the collar sits, with the tape snug but not pressing the coat flat. Measure a clipped spitz at the coat length it will have when wearing the clothes. A spitz is built square — body length roughly equals height at the withers — so the back is fairly short. If it is clearly shorter than the chart gives for that chest size (say, M by chest but a 27–28 cm back), the garment may be too long: choose “Custom size”, or just place the order and our manager will help you pick. Step-by-step instructions are in the size guide.

Height and weight are only a hint: the chest girth decides the size.

When a Pomeranian needs clothes

A spitz coat holds heat well, but it has a weak spot: wet snow, mud and road salt stick to the belly, legs and the fluffy britches on the hind legs, and the dense undercoat takes a long time to dry after a walk. So in autumn and winter a spitz more often needs protection than warmth. Add an insulated layer if:
• the dog has been clipped short, for example in a teddy bear cut;
• it is a puppy, a senior or a dog recovering from illness;
• it is freezing and windy outside;
• the dog has alopecia (hair loss).
Take insulated clothes off indoors so your spitz does not overheat. More in does my dog need clothes.

A Pomeranian jumpsuit for winter and rain

In slush and thaw a jumpsuit is the most practical choice: it covers the belly and legs, the coat stays clean, and you wash and blow-dry your spitz less often. As a raincoat, pick the water-repellent “Heaven” membrane jumpsuit; for cool days, a fleece jumpsuit (fleece doesn’t soak through); for frost, the insulated “Gossip-puffer”. If your dog will not tolerate a jumpsuit, try the water-repellent “Brooklyn Jacket”, a fleece vest or an anorak — they leave the legs free. What to wear at which temperature: winter dog clothes.

What to choose for autumn and winter

After a haircut or with alopecia

Groomers usually advise against clipping a spitz short: after a close shave the undercoat may grow back slowly and unevenly. If your dog has been clipped or has alopecia (hair loss), the skin is left almost unprotected from cold, wind and sun. Instead of a sweater, a soft brushed hoodie or a jersey turtleneck works well at home and on walks. If the coat falls out in patches, see a vet first: clothes protect the skin but do not treat the cause.

Clothes for a Pomeranian puppy

Spitz puppies grow until about 8–12 months, and from roughly 3–6 months the puppy fluff is gradually replaced by the adult coat — the so-called “puppy uglies”. The chest girth changes fast during this time, so do not buy clothes for your puppy to grow into, and check the measurements every 2–3 weeks. More tips: puppy clothes.

Clothes for a girl or a boy

Feel with Fill models have the same cut for boys and girls, so choose by size and colour: girls often get pink and milk-white shades and dresses, boys khaki, anthracite and chocolate tones.

Clothes without mats

A spitz coat tangles most behind the ears, under the front legs and on the britches — wherever it rubs. To keep clothes from causing mats:
• choose a relaxed fit and a smooth lining, like the viscose one in the fleece vest;
• do not size down, especially at the chest and under the front legs;
• take clothes off indoors and brush your dog after the walk, more often during shedding.

What to wear in which weather

Dry frost down to 14 °F (−10 °C)an adult spitz in full coat — nothing or a fleece vest; a puppy, senior or clipped dog — an insulated jumpsuit
Rainan anorak, a jacket or a membrane jumpsuit
Slush, wet snow, road salta jumpsuit that covers the belly and legs
Below 14 °F (−10 °C), windan insulated jumpsuit or a puffer vest — especially for puppies, seniors and clipped dogs
After a batha cotton terry drying robe — helps the thick undercoat dry faster

Frequently asked questions

Does a Pomeranian need clothes?
Not always. In dry cold an adult spitz in full coat usually does without, while in rain and slush clothes keep the coat clean. Warm layers help after a haircut, for puppies and seniors, and in hard frost.

What size clothes does a Pomeranian wear?
Most often S–M (chest girth 31–41 cm / 12–16 in); the tiniest dogs wear XS (27–32 cm). A Kleinspitz usually wears M–L. Measure the chest without pressing the coat flat.

Which winter jumpsuit is best for a Pomeranian?
For slush and wet snow, the water-repellent “Heaven” membrane jumpsuit ($71); for frost, the insulated “Gossip-puffer” ($79); for cool weather, a fleece jumpsuit ($52). All of them cover the belly and legs.

What should a Pomeranian wear after a haircut or with alopecia?
A soft brushed hoodie or a relaxed jersey turtleneck: it keeps the dog warm and protects bare skin from cold and sun, even indoors. Ask your vet about the cause of the hair loss.

Can you make clothes to my Pomeranian’s measurements?
Yes. Any model can be sewn to your dog’s measurements for +15% in our own workshop in Kyiv; Feel with Fill has been around since 2023. Made-to-measure pieces cannot be exchanged or returned.

How long does an order take?
Production takes 3–6 business days from payment. Delivery within Ukraine is free on orders from UAH 4,000 (after discounts), and we also ship worldwide — see shipping and payment.
