Yorkie clothes: size, winter jumpsuit and turtlenecks
In short: an adult Yorkshire terrier usually weighs 2–3.5 kg (4.4–7.7 lb) and has a chest girth of roughly 28–40 cm (11–15.7 in). Most yorkies wear XS (27–32 cm) or S (31–36 cm), larger ones take M (35–41 cm), and for puppies or the tiniest mini yorkies with a chest under 27 cm we make clothes to measure. The long, silky coat has no undercoat, so it gives little warmth, picks up dirt and snow and tangles with friction. In winter a yorkie is most comfortable in a jumpsuit, in cool weather in a turtleneck or hoodie; choose a loose fit and a smooth lining.
Yorkie clothes size: chest, back and neck
| Your yorkie’s chest girth | Back length | Neck girth | Feel with Fill size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27–32 cm (10.6–12.6 in) | 21–25 cm (8.3–9.8 in) | up to 22 cm (8.7 in) | XS |
| 31–36 cm (12.2–14.2 in) | 26–30 cm (10.2–11.8 in) | up to 26 cm (10.2 in) | S |
| 35–41 cm (13.8–16.1 in), larger yorkies | 31–35 cm (12.2–13.8 in) | up to 30 cm (11.8 in) | M |
| under 27 cm (10.6 in) or unusual proportions | to measure | to measure | Custom size |
Measure the chest at its widest point just behind the front legs, the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and the neck where the collar sits. Do not pull the tape tight: long hair takes up room, and a snug garment will crush it into mats. If your dog falls between two sizes, go by the chest girth. Step-by-step instructions are in the size guide.
Mini, standard or large yorkie: weight as a hint
The breed standard puts a yorkie at no more than 3.2 kg (7 lb), yet real dogs range from about 1.5 to 5 kg (3.3–11 lb). A “mini yorkie” is not a separate breed, just a very small yorkie. Weight tells you where to start, but the chest girth decides.
| Adult yorkie’s weight | Usually fits |
|---|---|
| up to 2 kg / 4.4 lb (mini yorkie) | XS or made to measure |
| 2–3.2 kg / 4.4–7 lb | XS–S |
| 3.2–4.5 kg / 7–10 lb | S–M |
| over 4.5 kg / 10 lb | M or made to measure |
Warm clothes for a yorkie in winter
A yorkie’s coat is structured much like human hair. With no undercoat it holds little heat in frost, and snow clumps and de-icing salt quickly build up on the belly and legs. That is why the main winter piece for a yorkie is a jumpsuit that covers the belly and legs. A fleece one does not soak through and keeps the dog warm in cool weather and dry frost, the water-repellent “Heaven” is made for slush and wet snow, and the warmest option is the padded “Gossip-puffer”. If your yorkie will not tolerate a jumpsuit, try a puffer vest or a fleece anorak, with a turtleneck underneath on colder days. More on layers and temperatures in winter dog clothes.
Our picks for a yorkie this autumn and winter

Pick a standard size or have any model made to your dog’s measurements. See more in jumpsuits, vests, anoraks and hoodies, and lighter pieces for home in jumpers and turtlenecks.
Long hair and mats: what to look for
A yorkie’s silky hair tangles wherever fabric keeps rubbing — under the front legs, on the chest and around fastenings. To keep the coat in good shape:
• pick a smooth lining — the fleece vests and the “Brooklyn Jacket” are lined with natural viscose, and the “Hugme” hoodie has a natural lining in the hood and sleeves;
• check the fastenings — the fleece jumpsuit has a hidden hook-and-loop tab at the neck, and the anorak zip is edged with trim, so hair does not get caught;
• avoid a skin-tight fit, take the clothes off indoors and brush your yorkie after the walk, especially behind the front legs.
Harness, neckline and hood
Yorkies have a slim neck and a delicate windpipe, so many owners walk them on a harness rather than a collar. The “Puffy” puffer vests, the fleece vests and the “Heaven” jumpsuit have a harness opening, and the hood of the “Teddy” hoodie fastens with a snap, so it is comfortable with a harness too. The neckline should sit close without pressing: on a thin neck a loose neckline slides around, and the hidden tab on the fleece jumpsuit lets you adjust its width.
Sweater, turtleneck or hoodie after a haircut
Many owners keep their yorkie in a short cut because it is easier to look after. Once clipped, the dog may feel the cold even indoors and needs a light warm layer. The soft-knit “Charmie” turtleneck keeps the back and neck warm, and the jumper with pompoms is made of combed-cotton knit — both work at home and under a vest outdoors. On cool days add a brushed hoodie. If the coat is kept long, choose smooth knitwear over a chunky-knit sweater: long hair snags in the loops.
Clothes for a yorkie puppy
At 2–3 months a yorkie puppy usually weighs under 1.5 kg (3.3 lb), and its chest is often less than 27 cm — smaller than XS. For such a tiny dog choose “Custom size”: our manager will confirm the measurements and we will sew the piece to fit. Yorkies grow until roughly 9–12 months, so do not buy several sizes up and re-measure every 2–3 weeks. More tips in puppy clothes.
Yorkie clothes for a boy or a girl
Our patterns are not split into boy and girl versions: you choose the size by the same measurements, and the only difference is colour and accessories. For girls, owners often pick pink, milk-white and light-blue shades, dresses and bandanas; for boys, khaki, anthracite and chocolate tones are popular.
What to put on a yorkie in different weather
| Weather | What works |
|---|---|
| Cool, +10…+15 °C (50–59 °F) | a turtleneck, a jumper or a light hoodie |
| Wind, +5…+10 °C (41–50 °F) | a brushed hoodie or a vest |
| Rain and slush | an anorak or the water-repellent “Heaven” jumpsuit — the coat stays clean and dry |
| Frost and snow | a fleece jumpsuit or the padded “Gossip-puffer”, with a turtleneck underneath in hard frost |
| After a bath | a terry drying robe |
Frequently asked questions
Does a yorkie need clothes?
Mostly yes. A yorkie has no undercoat and a small body that loses heat fast, so it can feel the cold even at around +10 °C (50 °F), especially in wind, rain and after a haircut. Clothes also keep the long coat clean of mud and de-icing salt.
What size of clothes does a yorkie wear?
Usually XS (chest 27–32 cm) or S (31–36 cm); larger yorkies wear M (35–41 cm). Weight is only a hint — always measure the chest.
What should a 2–3-month-old yorkie puppy wear?
Something light and soft that goes on quickly: a turtleneck, a hoodie or a vest. If the chest is under 27 cm, order a custom size.
Jumpsuit or vest for a yorkie in winter?
A jumpsuit: it covers the belly and legs, so the long hair does not collect snow and salt. A puffer vest is handy for short walks in dry frost.
Will clothes cause mats?
They can if the piece is tight or the fabric is rough. Choose a loose fit and a smooth lining, take the clothes off indoors and brush your yorkie after walks.
Can you make clothes for a mini yorkie to measure?
Yes. We sew any model to your dog’s measurements in our own studio in Kyiv; a custom size costs 15% more and takes 3–6 business days from payment. Made-to-measure items cannot be exchanged or returned, so our manager will help you take the measurements.
