Toy terrier clothes: size, winter jumpsuit and hoodies

In short: a toy terrier (Russian Toy) usually weighs 1.5–3 kg (3.3–6.6 lb) with a chest girth of 24–33 cm, so most toy terriers wear size XS — chest 27–32 cm, back 21–25 cm. If your dog is even tinier (chest under 27 cm), we sew any model to measure for 15% extra in 3–6 business days. A tiny body loses heat fast and the coat has almost no undercoat, so a toy terrier may start feeling the cold at around +10 °C (50 °F): in winter it needs an insulated jumpsuit, on cool days a hoodie or a turtleneck.

Toy terrier clothes size

Your toy terrier’s measurementsFeel with Fill size
Chest under 27 cm (10.6 in) or back shorter than 21 cm (8.3 in)Custom size
Chest 27–32 cm (10.6–12.6 in), back 21–25 cm, neck up to 22 cmXS
Chest 31–36 cm (12.2–14.2 in), back 26–30 cm, neck up to 26 cmS

Measure the chest at its widest point right behind the front legs, and the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Toy terriers are almost square in outline — long legs, fairly short back — so a dog can be an XS by the chest and still find the XS a little long in the back. In that case pick “Custom size” and our manager will confirm the measurements with you. Step-by-step instructions are in the size guide.

Mini toy terrier: a guide by weight

Adult weightUsually fits
under 1.5 kg / 3.3 lb (the so-called mini toy)made to measure
1.5–2.5 kg / 3.3–5.5 lbXS
over 2.5 kg / 5.5 lbXS or S

Weight is only a starting point: two dogs of the same weight can differ by a few centimetres in the chest and back. The chest girth has the final say.

Winter clothes for a toy terrier

For winter, a jumpsuit is the best choice: it covers the back, belly and legs — and since a toy terrier usually stands just 20–28 cm (8–11 in) at the shoulder, even shallow snow reaches the belly. In frost go for the insulated “Gossip-puffer”; for cool, damp days a fleece jumpsuit, which keeps the dog warm and does not soak through. In slush and wet snow the “Heaven” jumpsuit in water-repellent membrane fabric works best, with a detachable hood and a hidden harness opening. If your dog will not tolerate a jumpsuit, try the fleece coat “Gossip-coat” with a fur collar that blocks the wind: it goes on in one movement, with no need to thread those thin legs through sleeves.

What to pick for autumn and winter

Sweater, turtleneck or hoodie: for cool days and indoors

At +10…+15 °C (50–59 °F), or in a chilly flat, one light layer is enough. As an everyday sweater, the soft knitted turtleneck “Charmie” with a delicate pattern or the pom-pom jumper in combed cotton knit works well. For more warmth choose a hoodie: the brushed “Hugme” with a natural lining in the hood and sleeves, or the plush “Teddy”, whose hood fastens with a snap — handy if your dog wears a harness. Do not keep the clothes on all day at home: a toy terrier gets cold outside but overheats quickly in a warm room.

What to keep in mind

• Weight. On a 2 kg dog every extra gram counts, so for daily walks choose light fleece and knits, and save the insulated jumpsuit for frost.
• Fragile legs. Toy terriers have fine bones — dress your dog calmly, one leg at a time, without pulling or twisting the joints. The fleece jumpsuit is the easiest to put on: it has a zip along the back.
• Neckline. The neck is thin, and a piece with a loose neckline slides to one side. If the XS (neck up to 22 cm) is too wide at the neck, a custom size is the better option.
• Harness. Many toy terriers walk more comfortably in a harness than on a collar. The fleece vest and the puffer vest, the “Gossip-coat” and the “Heaven” jumpsuit all have a harness opening.

Clothes for a toy terrier puppy

Toy terrier puppies usually grow fastest until about six months and fill out closer to a year. Do not buy clothes for a puppy to grow into: a piece that is too big gets tangled under its legs and does not keep it as warm. Measure the chest every 2–3 weeks; for a very small puppy with a chest under 27 cm, made-to-measure is the way to go. More tips in our guide to puppy clothes.

Toy terrier clothes for girls and boys

Feel with Fill models have the same cut for girls and boys, so choose by size and colour. Pink, milk-white and light-blue shades and dresses are popular for girls; khaki, anthracite and chocolate for boys.

What to wear in which weather

WeatherWhat works
Cool, +10…+15 °C (50–59 °F)a light hoodie or turtleneck
Windy, +5…+10 °C (41–50 °F)a brushed hoodie or a fleece vest
Cold, 0…+5 °C (32–41 °F)a fleece jumpsuit or the “Gossip-coat”
Rain and drizzlea fleece anorak with a moisture-resistant finish
Slush and wet snowthe “Heaven” jumpsuit or a fleece jumpsuit
Frost, below 0 °C (32 °F)the insulated “Gossip-puffer” and short walks

Below −10 °C (14 °F), 10–15 minutes outside is usually enough for a toy terrier: if your dog lifts its paws, shivers or asks to be picked up, it is time to head home. More on layering, road salt and how long to walk in the cold: winter dog clothes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a toy terrier need clothes?
Yes, in cool, windy and wet weather: a small body loses heat quickly, and smooth-coated toy terriers have almost no undercoat. Long-coated ones are a little warmer, but they need clothes in frost and slush too.

What size does a toy terrier wear?
Most often XS (chest 27–32 cm); larger dogs wear S (31–36 cm). If the chest is under 27 cm, choose “Custom size”.

Which winter jumpsuit should I buy for a toy terrier?
For frost the insulated “Gossip-puffer” ($79), for cool weather and damp snow the fleece jumpsuit ($52), for slush the membrane “Heaven” ($71). All of them come in XS.

Sweater or jumpsuit?
A turtleneck or hoodie for home and dry cool days; outdoors in cold, snow and slush, a jumpsuit, because it covers the belly and legs. In hard frost you can add a thin hoodie under the jumpsuit: two thin layers keep a dog warmer than one thick one. Just make sure the jumpsuit does not sit skin-tight.

Can you make clothes for a mini toy terrier?
Yes. Any model can be ordered in a custom size for 15% more, made in 3–6 business days from payment. Made-to-measure pieces cannot be exchanged or returned, so our manager helps you take the measurements first.

Where are the clothes made and how long does delivery take?
In our own workshop in Kyiv, Ukraine, where we have been sewing since 2023. Production takes 3–6 business days from payment; we ship worldwide (the manager agrees the shipping cost and payment method with you), and delivery usually takes 1–2 weeks depending on the country. Within Ukraine, orders from UAH 4,000 (after discounts) ship free.
