Pug clothes: sizing, a loose neckline and winter jumpsuits
In short: a pug is a compact, solid, square-built dog (usually 6–8 kg / 13–18 lb) with a wide chest, a short thick neck and a short back. An adult pug’s chest girth is roughly 48–60 cm (18.9–23.6 in), while the back is only 28–36 cm (11–14.2 in), so standard sizes XS–XL rarely fit: a piece chosen by the chest is too long, and one chosen by the back is too tight. That is why we recommend made-to-measure clothes for adult pugs: +15% to the model’s price, 3–6 business days. The second rule is about breathing: pugs are brachycephalic, so the neckline must not press on the neck and warm clothes must not overheat the dog.
Pug clothes size: measurements and chart
| Measurement | Adult pug (approx.) | Feel with Fill size by this measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Chest girth | 48–60 cm (18.9–23.6 in) | XL (45–51 cm / 17.7–20.1 in); wider chest — made to measure |
| Back length | 28–36 cm (11–14.2 in) | S–L (26–40 cm / 10.2–15.7 in) |
| Neck girth | 32–40 cm (12.6–15.7 in) | L–XL (up to 34 / 38 cm, 13.4 / 15 in) |
Each measurement points to a different row of the chart — that is what makes the breed tricky to dress. A ready-made piece fits well only when your pug’s chest, back and neck all land in one row of the size chart — and with this breed that is rare. Otherwise made-to-measure is safer: a jumpsuit sized for the chest will bunch up on the back and squash the curled tail.
How to measure a pug
1. Chest girth — at the widest point, right behind the front legs.
2. Back length — from the base of the neck to the base of the tail; leave the curled tail out.
3. Neck girth — around the base of the neck, where the harness sits; a finger should slide under the tape easily.
Measure while the dog is standing. Pugs gain weight easily, so if your dog’s weight has changed noticeably, re-measure the chest before ordering.
Breathing and overheating: what matters in pug clothes
The pug is a brachycephalic breed: a shortened muzzle and, often, narrow nostrils and an elongated soft palate. It is harder for a pug to cool down by panting, so it overheats easily, and any pressure on the neck makes breathing harder still. Check every piece for:
• A loose neckline. Two fingers should slide freely between the neckline and the neck. On the fleece jumpsuit a hidden hook-and-loop fastening adjusts the neckline, and when we sew to measure we use your pug’s own neck girth.
• No tight high collar. A snug knitted turtleneck or a jumper with a narrow collar is best ordered to your pug’s neck measurement.
• A harness opening. Brachycephalic dogs are usually walked on a harness rather than a collar. The “Puffy”, the fleece vest, the “Heaven” and the “Gossip-coat” below all have one.
• A hood that stays off the eyes. Pugs have large, prominent eyes: the “Heaven” hood is removable, and the “Teddy” hoodie’s hood snaps on and off.
How not to overheat a pug in clothes
Put a warm piece on right before you head out and take it off as soon as you are back — in a warm stairwell, shop or bus a pug in a jumpsuit is already too hot. Signs of overheating: loud, laboured breathing with the mouth wide open, wheezing, a dark-red tongue, lethargy. If you see them, take the clothes off at once, move the dog somewhere cool, offer water and call your vet.
What a pug should wear in different weather
| Weather | What works |
|---|---|
| Cool and windy, +5…+12 °C (41–54 °F) | “Teddy” hoodie or fleece vest — a light layer without extra insulation |
| Rain, drizzle | “Brooklyn Jacket”: its raincoat fabric repels water |
| Wet snow, slush, salted pavements | “Heaven” jumpsuit — water-repellent, protects the belly and legs |
| Dry, down to −10 °C (14 °F) | “Puffy” puffer vest made of waterproof fabric or the fleece “Gossip-coat” |
| Below −10 °C (14 °F) or strong wind | fleece jumpsuit and shorter walks |
| Heat | no clothes; walk early in the morning and in the evening |
Our guide to winter dog clothes has a temperature chart for all breeds, and our article on whether your dog needs clothes explains when they really help.
Winter jumpsuit or vest for a pug
A pug stands low, so in slush it needs a jumpsuit that keeps wet snow and road salt off the belly and legs. The “Heaven” is water-repellent with a hidden harness opening. The fleece jumpsuit has a back zip, and the fleece itself stays warm and keeps moisture out. In dry frost and on active walks a vest is often more comfortable: the legs and armpits stay free, so the dog is less likely to overheat. Whatever you choose should stop at the base of the tail so it does not press on the curled tail.
Jumper, hoodie or turtleneck for a pug
At home and on windy days a soft layer is enough. A hoodie has a hood instead of a snug high collar, and on the plush “Teddy” the hood snaps on and off, which works well with a harness. The “Charmie” turtleneck keeps the neck warm, but the knit hugs the body, so for a pug it is best made to the neck measurement. If your dog breathes faster or louder than usual in any piece, take it off.
What to choose for a pug: six models

The cards show standard-size prices. Made-to-measure adds 15%, so the “Puffy” comes to $53 and the “Gossip-coat” to $76. Browse more in jumpsuits, vests, coats, hoodies and jumpers and turtlenecks.
When to have pug clothes made to measure
Choose “Custom size” if:
• the chest is over 51 cm (20.1 in) or the neck over 38 cm (15 in);
• the measurements fall into different rows of the chart — say, an XL chest with an M back;
• the neck is thick with folds and needs a looser collar;
• a ready-made piece pinches under the front legs or bunches up on the back.
How to order: select “Custom size” on the product page and place the order — the manager will confirm the measurements with you. We sew in our own workshop in Kyiv within 3–6 business days of payment; Feel with Fill has been making dog clothes since 2023. International shipping is arranged with the manager and usually takes 1–2 weeks; within Ukraine, orders from UAH 4,000 (after discount) ship free, otherwise at the carrier’s rates. Clothes for a pug puppy
A pug reaches its adult size at about 9–12 months and grows fastest in the first few months. So buy for the puppy’s measurements today, with no room to grow into, and check the chest and neck every 2–3 weeks: a neckline that has become tight makes breathing harder. At first, let the puppy wear a new piece indoors for just a few minutes and listen for noisier breathing. Our puppy clothes guide has tips on helping a puppy get comfortable in clothes step by step.
Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a pug wear?
Roughly: chest 48–60 cm (18.9–23.6 in), back 28–36 cm (11–14.2 in), neck 32–40 cm (12.6–15.7 in). By the chest that is XL or larger, by the back S–L, so for an adult pug we recommend made-to-measure.
Does a pug need clothes in winter?
Yes, in windy frost and in slush: a pug’s short coat gives little protection from cold and wet snow. But take warm clothes off as soon as you are indoors — pugs overheat easily.
Which winter jumpsuit should I buy for a pug?
For slush — the “Heaven”, with a removable hood and a hidden harness opening. For frost — the fleece jumpsuit with an adjustable neckline. Both cover the belly and legs.
How much do made-to-measure pug clothes cost?
15% more than the standard size: the fleece vest is $44, the fleece jumpsuit $60 and the “Heaven” $82. Sewing takes 3–6 business days from payment.
Can I return clothes that do not fit?
Standard-size items — yes, within 14 days; the customer pays for return shipping, and we cover it for defects or a wrong item. Made-to-measure pieces and items in a non-standard colour cannot be returned. See exchange and returns.
Do you have clothes for boy pugs?
Yes. Every model has a unisex cut, so any of them suits a boy pug — just go by the measurements and the colour you like.
