Poodle clothes: sizes from toy to standard poodle
In short: under the FCI standard, poodles come in four sizes: toy (up to 28 cm / 11 in at the shoulder), miniature (28–35 cm), medium (35–45 cm) and standard (45–60 cm). Toy poodles usually wear XS–S, miniatures M–L, medium poodles XL or a made-to-measure piece, and a standard poodle is too big for our ready sizes, which end at a 51 cm (20 in) chest, so please ask our manager whether we can make a piece to its measurements. A poodle’s curly coat has no undercoat, so it offers little protection in slush, frost or after a short clip: in winter a jumpsuit works best, after grooming a turtleneck or a hoodie.
Poodle clothes size chart by variety
| Poodle variety | Height at the shoulder | Weight (approx.) | Chest girth (approx.) | Feel with Fill size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy poodle | up to 28 cm (11 in) | 2–4 kg | 27–36 cm | XS–S |
| Miniature poodle | 28–35 cm (11–14 in) | 4–7 kg | 35–46 cm | M–L |
| Medium poodle | 35–45 cm (14–18 in) | 8–14 kg | 45–55 cm | XL or made to measure |
| Standard poodle | 45–60 cm (18–24 in) | 20–30 kg | 60–80 cm | made to measure only |
Height and weight only tell you where to start: within one variety some poodles are sturdier and some are slimmer. The chest girth is what decides the size. For the smallest poodles, see our toy poodle clothes guide.
How to measure a poodle
Stand the dog square and use a soft tape measure. You need three numbers: back length — from the base of the neck to the base of the tail; chest girth — at the widest point right behind the front legs; neck girth — where the collar sits. Keep the tape snug but do not flatten the coat. Measure your poodle at the coat length it will have when wearing the clothes: after a short clip the chest girth can drop noticeably.
| Size | Back length, cm | Chest girth, cm | Neck girth, cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 21–25 | 27–32 | up to 22 |
| S | 26–30 | 31–36 | up to 26 |
| M | 31–35 | 35–41 | up to 30 |
| L | 36–40 | 40–46 | up to 34 |
| XL | 41–45 | 45–51 | up to 38 |
Poodles have a deep chest, a tucked-up belly and long legs. If your numbers fall between two sizes, go by the chest girth; if a piece is tight across the chest or too long in the back, choose “Custom size”. Step-by-step instructions are in the size guide.
Clothes for medium and standard poodles
A medium poodle with a 45–51 cm chest usually fits XL. If the chest is wider or the back is longer than 45 cm, order the model made to measure: pick “Custom size” on the product page and our manager will confirm the measurements with you. A standard poodle is too big for our XS–XL chart, so please check with our manager before ordering whether we can make a piece to its measurements. A custom size costs 15% more than the listed price and takes 3–6 business days from payment. Made-to-measure pieces cannot be exchanged or returned, so double-check the numbers; standard sizes can be exchanged within 14 days.
Winter clothes for poodles
In snow and thaw a jumpsuit is the most practical choice: it covers the back, belly and legs, so the curls do not collect snowballs, de-icing salt and mud. A miniature poodle usually takes a jumpsuit in M–L, a medium poodle XL or made to measure. For slush there is the water-repellent “Heaven” with a removable hood and a hidden harness opening. For cool, damp days take a fleece jumpsuit: the fleece does not soak through, a back zip makes dressing easy and a hidden hook-and-loop tab at the neck keeps the coat from snagging. For frost choose the “Gossip-puffer”. If your poodle refuses jumpsuits, a fleece-lined coat “Gossip-coat” is easier: it has a fur collar against the wind, a harness opening and an adjustable strap. More tips for the cold season are in our guide to winter dog clothes.
What to choose for autumn and winter

Jumper, turtleneck or hoodie after a clip
A short teddy or lamb clip, and even more so a continental (lion) clip with shaved hindquarters, leaves a poodle with little protection from the cold, so it may feel chilly even indoors. Soft knit jumpers and turtlenecks and brushed hoodies help here. The “Hugme” hoodie has a natural lining inside the hood and sleeves that hides the seams, so claws do not catch when you dress the dog. A turtleneck works on its own at home, while the brushed hoodie holds warmth yet stays light, so it suits walks as well as cool days indoors.
Keeping the curls in shape
A poodle’s coat keeps growing and mats easily wherever fabric rubs: under the front legs, on the chest and near fasteners. Pick your true size rather than a tight fit, take the clothes off indoors and brush the dog after each walk.

FAQ
Does a poodle need clothes?
In cold and wet weather, yes. A poodle has no undercoat, so it feels the cold in slush, wind and especially after a short clip. Clothes also keep the curls clean of mud and de-icing salt.
What size does a medium poodle wear?
Usually XL (chest girth 45–51 cm). If the chest is wider or the back is longer than 45 cm, a made-to-measure piece will fit better.
Do you make clothes for standard poodles?
Our ready sizes go up to a 51 cm chest, so they are too small for a standard poodle. Please ask our manager before ordering whether we can make a piece to your poodle’s measurements.
What should a poodle wear in winter?
A jumpsuit: a puffer for frost, the water-repellent “Heaven” for slush, fleece for cool days. Larger poodles that dislike jumpsuits are often happier in a fleece-lined coat.
Jumper or hoodie after grooming?
A turtleneck or jumper is enough at home and in dry, cool weather; for windy walks a brushed hoodie is the better choice.
What size should I get for a poodle puppy?
Go by the current chest girth and don’t buy a size up “to grow into”: a jumpsuit that is too big slips and gets in the way when the puppy moves. Puppies grow fast, so re-measure every 2–3 weeks. More in our puppy clothes guide.
How long does a custom size take?
3–6 business days from payment, at 15% above the listed price. Made-to-measure pieces cannot be exchanged or returned.
